“Bitter|Sweet”

“Bitter|Sweet” is a progression of work created during the pandemic years - a series of emotionally connected stories in clay.

Through glass walls, the viewer is invited to observe a setting of safety and comfort. The room is adorned with pieces eliciting home: ceramic cups, bowls, butter dishes and decorative artwork on the wall. The soft curves, warm palette, and familiar designs provide a welcoming impression, but prolonged viewing reveals incongruous elements, unusual glazes, and precarious placements.

The ambiguities of the scene reflect the experience of safety and comfort my family and I enjoyed together in isolation, juxtaposed against the anxiety and fear felt from troubling world events. “Bitter|Sweet” is a personal exploration of a moment in time.
